They have been. Conservatism is a religion. They cannot give up the tenets of their faith. If faith was so easy to give up without losing your identity, then we would see deathbed conversions.

They won’t even admit the overwhelming dying is amongst conservatives now. (There are pockets of the USA where that’s not true, like my area where vaccines are now almost not-available due to government action.)
