re: #213 I Stand With Planned Parenthood

You know, that reminds me. I was thinking this morning about all the anti-choice /pro-birth zealots who say life begins at conception - with some pointing to the possibility that say discoveries on Mars or elsewhere of cellular organisms are life as proof that life begins at conception.

Sperm are alive. Eggs are alive. Either can survive for periods of time without fertilization, but that isn’t the point at which these folks claim life begins. They’re pointing to fertilization, which means it’s not about life, but personhood.

And if we go that route, then the woman is subordinate to the zygote or embryo or fetus they’re carrying (depending on the time since fertilization). That means the woman is deprived rights as a result, and that should not be tolerated.

Most galling of all is fact that the same anti-choice/pro birth zealots don’t care what happens to the woman or child after birth. Or health of the woman while she is pregnant for that matter. They’re left to the whims of society that they want to deprive of safety net programs that would feed, educate, and otherwise nurture the child if the family (or woman) is unable to provide sufficient funds to do so on their (her) own.
