I very much sympathize with Charles. I suspect he’s On The Spectrum, and intensely private, and shy, and Diana was a really lousy match for him. And I also sympathize with having One True Love who isn’t available - there was a decade when the not-yet-Mrs. FBW and I were dating other people while maintaining a friendship, and that was painful.

He’s in a role he probably doesn’t want, that makes demands on him that he has difficulty handling, and everyone dislikes him for it.

I kinda feel the same way. I don’t really like Charles, but I think I understand him. The guy was really put in an impossible situation, and he’s managed it to the best of his ability. Of course, it’s looking more and more likely that he’ll kick off before he has to deal with it, which must be an immense relief to him.
