Amnesia is certainly and entirely plausible, but what amazed me was that there was no mention of him on the BBC until he had awakened…that make me a bit skeptical.

I am sure he was already sworn to absolute secrecy as part of his job, they just wanted to ensure that he was well aware of that (and probably well rewarded for his silence)

Pretty sure you just missed it. It was a long time ago, but I remember hearing that the guy in the front passenger seat had survived. There wasn’t much follow-up about him, which isn’t surprising in view of who else was in that car.
