As a former seventeen-year-old, I will repeat what I said a while back, that a woman of seventeen can indeed consent to sex.

Some of them, sure. But as a 17-year-old you also couldn’t vote, get married, sign a lease, join the military, or get non-emergency medical care without parental co-sign. We have to draw the line somewhere, and the fact that some percentage of those below the line have emotional and intellectual capacity beyond the average for the age… doesn’t change that we have to draw the line somewhere, and we can’t individually examine everyone who thinks they should be above the line.

(also, the statutory rape laws about sex with a below-18 don’t apply if the person they’re having sex with is less than 2 years older. This is know as the Romeo and Juliet exception.)
