Had an interesting situation yesterday in a high school history class I subbed in for. We were covering late 19th century industrialization and the beginning of the Gilded Age capitalists. Proverbial Dead White Dude history.

One of my kids observes that this is Black History Month…so why aren’t we talking about black history? I respond that I have no good reason why in reply and that the question is an excellent one. However, the lesson plans are beyond my control. I did manage to work in some discussion of Frederick Douglas, Booker T Washington and WEB DeBois before the end of the hour. None of the kids had the slightest idea who any of them were, but I asked them all to take a few minutes and look them up that night on google and read.

Maybe it worked.
