Mondale flat out said he would “raise your taxes” and he had on the surface affable Grandpa Ron to tell us he wouldn’t make an issue of his opponent’s youth or inexperience and sad to say that was the beginning of the end for Mondale.

I’m a bit too young to remember it myself, but my impression is that Mondale laughing at that joke effectively ended the race.
