re: #194 Hecuba’s daughter

The point Jonathan is making is understandable; to make impeachment a more acceptable policy it needs to be framed as not overturning the 2016 election through switching the party in power. This can be handled by Pence resigning and someone acceptable, like Grassley taking over the VP; Trump resigning, Grassley promoted, and then Grassley nominating someone acceptable as VP. As much as I would love a President Pelosi, a change in party would provoke too much additional dissension to the impeachment process. But replacing the criminals with two Republicans who have no further ambition would be reasonable (and yes — this is a change from my previous Romney calculations)

The reason it’s an absurd idea is that it presumes the Democrats are operating from a position of weakness when they’re not. If Pelosi wants to be magnanimous when the time comes that’s fine, but if Republican bad faith has taught me anything it’s that the absolute last thing she should do is just preemptively give up that card in the hopes that the GOP will then see reason.
