I’d honestly make the point that the ‘Southern Strategy’ really was no more than the migration of of various types of Social Conservatives in the former Confederate States from the Democrats to the Republicans. Those seeking to criticize Nixon for encouraging such a move must ask what else Nixon could have done; Without those additional voters the GOP would have been in long-term minority status. Moreover, those Southern SoCons were not going to simply go away; If they had not stayed within the two party system
they might well have formed a third, regional party and then deadlock might have seting even stronger.

Well, since I’ve made it clear that I would rather be right than have Barack Obama be president, I suppose it’s pretty clear what I think that Nixon should have done…

Ugly politics makes perfect sense. People do ugly politics to gain advantage.

It doesn’t make it right.
