And worst (most ironic?) of all is that it was killed by a technology that was meant to spread information around at a pace impossible a generation ago.

The internet has made it less painful to be an idiot at the same time it made it less painful to learn something. Ultimately, it comes down to the same issues of people being unwilling to learn. We can blame flat earther, anti-vaxer, and other things on not being taught the scientific method, but most pre-internet people didn’t get it either. The ones who got it went into science.

It does give me the spark of an idea for a school lesson on the scientific method. I’ll have to think through it, but it should involve a device that gives a small shock, no stronger than the shock you get from carpet. Making it stop should involve the reasoning involved in the scientific method.
