Here’s how I would start a history class: “Every class you are taking is a history class. You’re not breaking new ground in mathematics, or unifying quantum mechanics and general relativity, or curing cancer in biology, or writing the next great novel in English. What you are learning is the foundation of all of those topics, because without that, you can’t make those breakthroughs. In here, you’re learning the history of politics, of how people interact, and what has gone right and what has gone horribly wrong. Because without that, you can’t make the world better.”
