I’m the product of a mixed marriage (A Dem and a Republican). Also growing up in a Foreign Service family, dinner and party conversations were about global events and policy. It was normal for people to discuss and debate civilly in a social situation. Aside from the political appointees (who were never invited to parties anyways) I don’t recall any angry zealots. People were often passionate but it was civil.
