I don’t support the idea of mandatory voting, for one simple reason: To vote is to make a statement about whom you think can do the job better. “Make your voice be heard” is sometimes said in relation to voting. However, freedom of speech also includes the right to be silent, to not be heard if that is what one wishes to do. Freedom means being able to vote or not vote according to what an individual sees fit to do (within those laws needed to protect life, liberty, and property, of course).

Of course, President Obama said no such thing about mandatory voting.
But that doesn’t stop the wingnuts from screaming that he’s going to do it.
