It’s all about tempting us with the promise that if we all work our assess off all the time, sacrificing physical/mental health along with family family to pursue a career, that we can all become one of the elite.

And if we fail, it is because we just didn’t try hard enough or suffer from moral failings.

I’ve seen the lie again and again in the service sector: “I started where you are, worked my ass off, and now I’m a manager!”

What you later find out after busting your ass for weeks/months is that the management team basically are all people who either A) fell into their positions to fill sudden vacancies or B) got promoted because they’re friends with the next people up the totem pole, so the whole “One day you could work your way up” really translates as “Stick with this job long enough and you might one day get picked for lack of a better option.”
