Smerconish has been talking on Philly radio for years (1210AM) and my view of him from listening was a staunch right wing ideologue. Brought out talking points and callers to make the point that the GOP was correct. Always. Sat in for Rush more than a few times and did the parrot. Then I saw him on MSNBC a while back and didn’t recognize what he was saying. Now I see he supported Obama in 08 and left the GOP in 2010. Surprise, surprise.

I avoid 1210 like the plague; I refer to it as Angry White Guy Radio.

I’d like to think that Smerconish is the rare conservative who realizes the GOP is off the rails and is addressing. But as you point out, even after 4 years it’s still hard to believe he supports Obama, given some of his past positions.

I heard one person once speculate that he’s angling for a gig on MSNBC or some other news network. Cynical? Yeah, but who knows?
