Back in the 1960’s the Democratic party split, with HHH leading the progressives but Wallace leading the old bigoted southern white Democrats eventually out of the party.
Since HHH, I can’t really say any Democratic party nominee for President has been ideologically driven. Carter… Mondale… right through Obama and Hillary, were basically calculated choices to bridge a conglomerate of old (back to FDR) voting demos.
The GOP has become the party of Christian white nationalism. That is bad. But they have an ideology and a way of propagating it. That is important, and it is why Trump is in the WH and the GOP controls the Senate.
