So my Chrome seems to be working fine, without my doing anything techie (except the bare minimum of updating Chrome when new version is released and tells me). So can someone explain using very simple language why I’m ok and others aren’t? I am using an ancient computer passed on to me by my sister, but one that has Windows 10 installed.

The operating system version is the key here. Older operating systems are unable to update their certificates to record that LetsEncrypt renewed theirs. The issue is that the version of MacOS that is incompatible with the new LetsEncrypt certificate is new enough that many people appear to still be using it.
