Dangerous chemical compounds from all of the chemical attacks, and spilled fuels, too, I think.

Grandpa told me about how bad those mustard gas attacks were. Sometimes they were so bad that he had to keep his gas mask sealed to his face when he tried to sleep. He said lots of soldiers wound up with permanent lung damage from the gas.

He thought those gas attacks were the worst thing that could ever happen in a war…until the atomic bomb came along…
