I have a feeling they might have meant it ironically, much the way Wonkette does when they write things like that (in fact, I at first thought the original article was from Wonkette, given the snarky tone) Sort of like, “idiot misogynists tend to be homophobic as well, so let’s call their favorite sport ‘gay’ just to troll them”.

That is how I read it.
