As for self-checkout - I was talking to someone in a store that eliminated them the other day and she said it was because of some kind of glitch where they were losing a lot of money (I didn’t get the details). It would be interesting to see some kind of cost benefit analysis of self-checkout. I have seen time after time that businesses fall into a short-term mentality, thinking that they can milk more profits from eliminating employees only to find that they’re mistaken.

There’s a lot of research that shows that the current obsession with making profits by driving labor costs as low as possible is counterproductive, and that paying employees a decent wage and treating them well is very often more profitable in the long run. It is a really be societal problem, IMO, that has a very significant economic impact and is part of what is driving the trend in CEO compensation that is so completely out of line with real wages for average employees.
