When I was a teenager in rural California, you were suspected of that ultimate crime, being a fag, if you:

-Refused to sacrifice your body and your spare time for the benefit of the local high school football team.
-Thought science and art might be a better bet than manual labor for improving your family’s financial status.
-Tended to speak out against brutish coaches and abusive bosses.
-Thought a VW bug was a more rational choice than a muscle car or a pickup.
-Refused to adopt the approved standards of grooming and dress.
-Questioned the historical authenticity of certain religious claims.

I was widely consiered gay for the above reasons. The fact that i did not have a girlfriend or much anything to do with women had to do with my nerdishness and social ineptitude, not any lack of interest. But that was seen as further proof.
And it turns out a number of my best friends in high school and college later came out of the closet. I did not know (nor did they, I guess) back then that they were gay.

Which would be seen as furhter proof.

In the meantime I have had dozens of girlfriends (not at once) and fathered four children.

Of course anyone who watched Brokeback Mountain knew that is no proof and of itself…
