Chuck Johnson's Lawyer Responds to Gawker's Lawyers: Please Have Pity on Me, Judge

The thing that really pisses me off is the attitude of some (old, white GOP voters) that say shit like, “I worked my way through college, why can’t these moocher kids?”

Which, of course, ignores that tuition has grown at a vastly higher rate than the pay of a high school graduate (but, hey, we don’t need to increase the minimum wage or anything).

It also ignores that the net effect of working at a job and taking a reduced credit load actually ends up resulting in the student paying more for tuition in most cases (especially if the college offers “block” tuition where the student pays the same amount for full-time status regardless of the number of credits taken between 12 and 18), since they have to take fewer classes each semester.

It also ignores the opportunity cost of having to stay in school for another year because you were only able to 12 credits each semester when you need to average 15 each semester to get to 120 credits for a bachelor’s degree in four years. (The student is foregoing an additional year of pay at bachelor’s degree rates because they’re still in school.)
