And that’s rather the point: The farthest that the GOP will defect from Trump is to suggest we need further investigations. We’ve heard them “dismayed” or “concerned,” but none are moving far from the reservation. So if Comey had started jailing journalists, we’d be hearing a lot of excuse-making about how Republicans were “concerned,” but would “need more information” before saying whether that was wrong or not.
