The electoral college was designed to help the less popular national party. That was the real point of the three fifths compromise. But I think if we had back to back elections where the party with fewer national votes had won the presidency (especially being from different parties), we probably would have seen real change.

I would be for keeping the Electoral College, but make it proportional to population and only have it kick in if no candidate gets a clear majority of the popular vote.
