re: #210 wheat-dogg

Diana did a lot to humanize the Royal Family. In many ways, she dragged them kicking and screaming into the 21st century. For one thing, though she was of the gentry, she was just a regular woman, working as a kindergarten teacher. She was not afraid to be casual and warm with people.

Elizabeth and Margaret were, like all royals of the early 20th century, products of a very cloistered childhood. Being aloof to a certain degree was baked into their personalities. (Well, maybe not Margaret so much.) Diana’s insistence that her sons attend regular schools was very wise. They grew up to be more normal, wild behavior and all.

OTOH the Queen has let her guard down a few times, like when she photobombed some teenagers taking a selfie.

Elizabeth seems like an extremely cool person. She served in the military fixing jeeps in WWII, and is apparently tech-savvy enough to run her own Twitter account. She’s had a few rough spots in her reign, but that’s probably to be expected when she’s been on the throne since the ’50s…
