It was a somewhat facile answer, and of course people compartmentalize. I think it is a lot harder to do if there is more diversity in your life than just that nice Black family in your church, or that great immigrant guy that runs the gas station.
Even here in the Bay Area you can harbor all sorts of prejudices about “those people” but it is harder because all sorts of “those people” are everywhere.
That is granted. I think that’s why wingnutism seems to fester in Middle America - yeah, fishfolk might have the occasional run-in with a family of “others”, but the vast majority of people they encounter are pasty-white wingnuts just like themselves, so they can kinda coast along on their beliefs and not think too hard on the implications as it involves their non-white-male-wingnut “friends”.
