They did find the identity of the East Area Rapist/Original Night Stalker/Golden State Killer a few months back and arrested him; it’s been suggested that similar methods might be used to find out who the Zodiac was. It was the result of a DNA match.

Sadly, there’s a not-insignificant percentage of homicides that go unsolved, as in the unfortunate case in your family.

Apparently they tried to get his DNA from the back of stamps on the letters he sent. But getting the Zodiac’s DNA is only half the battle. They still have to find matches within the limited DNA databases
