The guy that sits across from me, the 2 guys on either side of him, and the guy next to me are all H1-Bs and I love them dearly.

My wife is not a fan of H1-B visas, but that is from personal experience in software engineering.

She noted after Digital Equipment collapsed and she tried to get another job in her field, job advertisements and such would be exceptionally specific and impossible. After a company ran that a couple months, that gave them an excuse to hire someone on an H1-B visa.

Those visas also really limit what a person working under one can do; they just can’t quit a crappy job and move on to another—they can be deported for that.

Chuck Grassley introduced legislation about a decade ago to curtail such fraud in the programme, but lobbying by the tech industry killed the bill.

During the Obama administration, a case was opened up by the Labor Department to investigate complaints against California Edison. They obtained H1-B visas for technical workers from other countries, then fired five hundred American workers. The Labor Department found no wrongdoing.
