You have to be at least thirty-five.

In the near future, assuming Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez continues to be a good representative (or becomes a senator), running at age thirty-five she’ll have over a decade of experience in governance.

Most people who run for Congress don’t start out as young as she did. They kind of take the path I did (sans running for Congress)—starting in a local office, building up to a state office, then Congress. That takes decades.

Someone on the young end is very likely to have little or no government experience, and we can see how that works out with Trump.

Most presidents (and even presidential nominees) don’t often have local experience. Obama served in the Illinois legislature before the Senate, GWB, Clinton, Reagan, and Carter were all governors with no other elected offices. GHWB was all over federal government positions. Nixon and Kennedy started off in Congress together.

I think you have to go back to LBJ, who served on a local school board to find a president who previous held a local office.
