Nixon avoided impeachment by realizing he couldn’t win and resigning, that asking his own party to sabotage the effort was not only a losing prospect but also one that would damage them as well as the country.

Reagan and Dubya both avoided impeachment because they not only enjoyed the (earned) loyalty of their admin, but also because they had approval ratings high enough that Dems knew impeachment would be practically suicidal as a party.

Trump got impeached twice because he not only gave not a single fuck about his own party or his underlings, but because he is such an unpopular shitheel that there was no real downside to impeaching him for the Dems.
