In our neighborhood on SI we had twice weekly milk, egg and bread deliveries and a knife sharpener drove down our street weekly with a distinctive bell for those who needed their knives, scissors, etc. sharpened. Also, the SI railroad still had wicker seats. In the summer it hurt to wear shorts!

In the summer we used to run behind a truck that sprayed for mosquitoes and there we were in those huge clouds of insecticide! That’s an early memory, and it’s a wonder I have a brain left to tell it after inhaling whatever that was.
