I think it’s hard to discuss future leaders while the party is in disarray. Until the fisc-cons regain control, I’m not very hopeful about 2010 or 2012.

One of the few people I am keeping an eye on is Jon Huntsman, Jr. He’s currently our new ambassador to China, and I think that will really help him on the international area of his resume. He’s a former governor, pro-business, anti-tax, anti-ID, and pro-gay marriage. He’s exactly the sort of modern conservative the party needs, but the existing machine within the machine won’t have him. The party dynamics have to change before we’ll ever get such a forward thinking republican nominated.

Excellent point. Obama obviously saw him as a viable threat in 2012 which is why he appointed him to the Chinese post. Get him as far away from domestic politics as possible until Obama is safely reelected!
