One way that might indicate to people just how much their income tax is could be to have you go up to the pay window and be given your pay in dollar coins. The pay master would count out your pay in the coins and just before you picked them up the pay master would take back enough of the coins for the required withholding. Perhaps actually seeing your pay be diminished in front of you would drive home just how big a bite the tax was.

Except that this would require all income to be paid out in liquid capital, causing the demand for it to shoot up to levels that would be impraticale to say the least…
