I don’t really know how the royal family makes money other than salaries from their other occupations (in Harry’s case the military.) The duchies apparently are not really at the discretion of the royal family, though of course they have the privilege of using their lands for their own pleasure.

IOW, I don’t think Charles can take, say, a few million dollars from his duchy and invest in something else. It’s ownership only in the sense of exclusive use.

Charles gets the income from his estate and can use it as he sees fit. In more recent times both he and his mother pay taxes on their income (not sure when that started, probably late 20th century)
