We went for a few years running in the late 90s/early aughts. We used to go around Halloween - the crowds were big enough to get the party vibe, but not a total crush like Mardi Gras (did that once, never again).

Also, they have Jazzfest/Voodoofest around that time. It’s a good time to visit.

I hear October is the best time to go.
