re: #213 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus
Living in Japan for a few years and then returning to the US really opened my eyes at how readily Americans accept sub-standard stuff, from appliances to food.
The Walmart-ization of America accomplished something the Soviet Union never could - deconstructed our will for making things well.
Actually Walmart simply took advantage of the GOP success in union busting which stagnated incomes. With less and less money to afford clothing, food, appliances, etc. people looked to cheaper items. I knew quite a few that understood that you would go through 3 pairs of walmart shoes over the lifespan of better shoes but could not spare the money for the higher quality shoes since the minimum wage is a sick joke.
