They were hoping for an overreach that they could use to shut the whole thing down. Instead, most everything Obama proposed today has support, majority if not supermajority, amongst voters. What happens going forward is likely to be a very brutal, very emotional, punch-up in Congress as Republicans try to justify why burying their heads far enough up Wayne LaPierre’s backside that they can tell what he had for lunch is the right choice versus listening to the voters of America.

Boehner will bury it in the house and it will not come up for a vote, with the possible exception of closing the gun show loophole in order to offer a fig leaf of sorts. He knows that a debate in the house would be the ultimate nutshow and he also knows that he could not survive a leadership challenge if this somehow got away from his control.

I also expect Boenher will try to bury an impeachment bill…but I don’t know if he will be able to.
