It’s all a nasty cycle unfortunately. One group assimilates and some of their descendants become just as nasty as the nativists to their ancestors were.

I think that behavior set is very deeply set in our culture if not partially hardwired. The same behavior crops up in fraternities regarding hazing activities. “We suffered this, so it’s our turn to inflict it on the next group.”

It’s an opportunity twisted into power abuse rather than compassion and empathy.
