I would not begrudge them this little bit of administrative hair-splitting as long as they ensure that the rights granted were truly equal in all respects. To me it is about equal rights under the law, regardless of what is printed on the registration forms.

Beg to differ: “equal” means “equal” - marriage licenses are civil contracts authorized by a government, and shouldn’t discriminate. Do think they should have separate forms for, say, black couples than for white ones? Or for, say, Christians and Jews? Hard to see how this would stand up to a court challenge.
