There is an argument that a drop or three of water helps release some of the esters in the beverage that will make it taste and smell better. But even then, we’re not talking about half water like too many people do.

My former boss (English) used to make disdainful remarks about my barbaric colonial habit of pouring my whisky* over a medium ice cube to chill/dilute it just enough to bring out the aroma/taste: but of course, doctored HIS via a small pour of pre-chilled water from the fridge. The difference escaped me - although the extensive testing required to see which method was better was quite rigorously conducted….

*single-malt Scotches generally.
