To expand - in the clip she’s saying that people impute motives to him, and strategy, and thought, where there is none. And again, maybe it’s just me, but I think it’s far more damning to say that Trump didn’t understand why everyone was so upset with, for example, the Helsinki press conference, than to say that it’s all part of some nefarious plot on his part. She’s saying he really is that simpleminded. People tell him things and it just doesn’t stick.

It doesn’t compliment Trump but it does something worse, it strengthens a narrative that reduces his criminal culpability. If he’s just some bungling dotard lacking the capacity for mens rea then that in effect humanizes him in a way that frankly he doesn’t deserve.

It’s also not true, he’s an idiot but he has a real facility for low cunning.
