My daughter is visiting Eastern Europe on her spring break this week. The other day she was in Prague and visited the Jewish Museum. I’ve taught her to be pro-Israel (and in fact, my natural father was Jewish), so she was anxious to see the museum. It covers the entire history of Jews in the region, from the Middle Ages to the Holocaust and beyond. She was overwhelmed by the whole experience. She just could not believe the insanely evil things that were done at various times in history. The main impressions she got out of it, she said, where an appreciation of the courage of the Jews, their love of learning, and how they always found a way to survive and thrive despite the restrictions placed on them. And the ultimate irony is, all those restrictions and prohibitions that prevented them from assimilating are what helped them survive as a people for thousands of years.
