This is an interesting question… Let’s say Obama decided to run for a House seat next year. He wins, and the Democrats garner a majority in the House, thus electing Obama Speaker of the House. More evidence comes to light of illegal activities by the Trump administration. Pence reads the writing on the wall and resigns. Trump is impeached and removed from office before either House votes on a replacement VP. Technically, Obama could be succeed as president because the 22nd Amendment says no one may be elected president more than twice. But the January 21 deadline doesn’t technically matter either because the 2 year rule applies to someone being elected. So, if the Democrats were being House of Cards devious, they’d wait to do all of this until January 2021, then Obama could serve a full 4 years.
