I went to go look up why he didn’t serve in WW2, unlike so many of the other actors of his time. The studio he worked for actually filed the paperwork that kept him from being drafted. Movies were actually considered to be in the public interest enough, propaganda obviously, that the studio got him deferred. When he was finally eligible, in 1945, he was then too old to serve.
