(subtext: Jesus was actually saying, “Where we’re going, we don’t need swords.” But of course, sarcasm doesn’t translate in a 2000-year-old text.)

There was a recent thread on the subreddit /r/AppalachianTrail where a guy asked if it would be legal for him to carry a sword with him since his “personal religion” required it. He quoted Luke 22:36 as the basis for his “personal religion”. I guess he never read all the way to Luke 22:37 and Luke 22:38 where Jesus basically says “you already have two? Dude - *sigh* that’s good enough - we only need them there so no one will question that we fulfilled the prophecy.”
