The shows were good but the books are even better. It’s a fascinating period in English history (the Anarchy) that is rarely noticed in America.

I read a couple of them ages ago and I agree that they are better. One of the interesting things about this episode — A Morbid Taste For Bones — was it took place in Wales, and Cadfael being Welsh himself made for an interesting conflict with the clerical higher-ups, i.e, sanctimonious bumpkins. It also had a strong female character who reminded me a lot of the wildling Ygritte in Game of Thrones.
