More measures may be on the way:

This is insanity.

Any such risks of intimidation are outweighed by the risks of someone who is unstable having ready access to a gun.

What I’d do is twofold (No. 1 might already be done):

1. Set up a classification system to distinguish between who really is a risk and others who might be under great stress but who aren’t a risk to themselves or others.

2. If someone is of real concern, there should be a system for that person depositing their gun(s) with the provost martial for safekeeping while they get the help they need.

The above measures do not apply to someone who requires inpatient psychiatric care. A person requiring that sort of care is disallowed from owning firearms under federal law, a position that the NRA affirmed on Friday, so they cannot object to it.

Frankly though, I doubt the NRA will raise any further objections to such a bill in the wake of Newtown. They made a big enough deal over mental illness that to oppose it would be obvious hypocrisy.
