With all the hubbub in TV-land over Matt Smith making good on his previous threat to leave Dr. Who there is rampant speculation on who next will play the character, but the following has picked up steam:

Should the next Doctor Who be a woman?

Personally two things come to mind:
(1) Remember that the original brief for the series was to be a children’s show. It was not primarily intended for adults, though a great deal of the 10th doctor’s programs seemed to be aiming at an older audience. Then the Smith version of the Doctor included some episodes that appeared to appeal again to a slightly younger audience.
(2) I’d rather see the series rest again. At least 5 years, maybe 10. The current run was enhanced, I propose, by the long wait from the last of the campy set well over a decade ago was allowed to fade from memory. A long rest would allow a totally new reboot (like what BBC did in 2005) for a new senior producer to take it in a new direction.
