(rest cut) Disclaimer: the current use of “conservative” refers to people who don’t have a conservative bone in their bodies. They refuse to concede that they might not be right about anything. They are reactionaries. They are radicals. There’s no way in hell a radical can be conservative. Calling these people conservative is a sugar coating they aren’t worthy of.

Goldwater wasn’t a “true conservative” (so they memory-holed his support for Planned Parenthood). Wallace wasn’t a “true conservative.” McCarthy wasn’t a “true conservative, he was a reactionary.” Reagan wasn’t a “true conservative” (so they made up what they wanted about him). GW Bush wasn’t a “true conservative” (so they memory holed him).

Nope. Today’s crop of conservatives are no different. Conservatism is the endless quest of trying to find the “True Conservative (tm)” and when the latest Great White Hope turns out not to meet expectations, then it’s “the party left me, I didn’t leave the party” (my wife constantly uses that one from her days before being a Libertarian) or “he isn’t really a True Conservative.”
