Galileo’s big problem was not so much his support of Copernicus’ theory, but his open defiance of Papal and Church authority at a time when the Counter-Reformation was in full swing.

Replace Copernican theory with climate change, and Papal authority with today’s right wingers, and then there’s a pretty good analogy. They see him in a different light, however.
